Part 9 of 18 — Promises by Canada’s oil sands industry to deploy CCUS technology at bitumen extraction sites and production-related operations in Alberta will not significantly curb the rising volume of greenhouse gas emissions contributed by Canada’s oil production if we continue expanding production to 2030 and 2040.

Part 8 of 18 — Canada’s declared climate plan is to “cap” the emissions released into the atmosphere from the oil production process in Canada but at the same time continue increasing our oil production and oil exports for another 20 years.

Part 7 of 18 — The final step taken to legally authorize the construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project (TMX) was a decision by the cabinet – collectively the thirty members of the Trudeau Government – announced on November 29, 2016.

Part 6 of 18 — A third process, the Ministerial Panel on the Trans Mountain Pipeline, was a final government “process” that was appointed in March of 2016, shortly before the government’s final decision approving this project.

Part 5 of 18 — Between 2013 and 2016, Canadians had an opportunity to examine the climate implications of Canada’s expanding oil production during the lengthy inquiry process that preceded the final decision by the Federal cabinet authorizing the construction of the Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMX) Expansion.

Part 4 of 18 — No environmental assessment or public inquiry process of any kind in Canada has ever answered the crucial question, which is whether the planned growth of Canada’s oil production to 2030 and 2040 is compatible with keeping increased warming to 1.5°C.

Part 3 of 18 — When the Federal Government on March 29, 2022, released its most recent climate policy statement called the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP), the 233-page document included a detailed plan to continue increasing Canada’s oil production to 2030 and maintain high production levels for another 20 years after that.

Part 2 of 18 — The International Energy Agency’s “Net-Zero by 2050 Scenario” (NZE), first published on May 18, 2021, is the leading international study that has examined the magnitude of the reductions in oil production that will be required on a global scale to avoid a catastrophic climate outcome.
